Hyundai Elantra GT Is The New Korean Hot Hatch

If there is one thing I love in the automotive world, it’s a good hatchback, and Hyundai has just released and exciting new one. The new 2018 Elantra GT is an all-new model based on the Euro-spec i30. That means aggressive new styling, a nicer interior, and plenty of space in the rear. The Europeans demand a lot from their hatchbacks, so I expect a lot from this new five-door.

Some of the big highlights include optional LED headlamps, the largest cargo area in the class, wireless smartphone charging, and a standard eight-inch head unit with Android Auto and Apple Car Play. But the greatest part about the all-new Elantra GT is the coming Sport trim. This takes the spacious and handsome Elantra hatch and adds a turbocharged engine and a clutch pedal.

Hell. Yes.

There is a base 2.0-liter engine that makes 162 horsepower, but I don’t care about that. I want the 1.6-liter, 200 horsepower motor. For those keeping track, that is more power than the Fiesta ST and Juke Nismo, two of my favorite hot hatches. It does lag behind the Focus ST and Golf GTI though, so it will be interesting to see how things shake out in the price to performance ratio.

Regardless, if you are a fan of five-door practicality with turbocharged shenanigans hidden under the hood, Hyundai wants to talk to you. No pricing or release dates yet, but expect it to come soon. Keep your eyes here on Grip The Wheel and we will be sure to update you guys when we find out.
