I’ll admit it. I have a weakness for station wagons. Perhaps it’s because my first car was a 1977 Ford LTD Station Wagon, affectionately known as Bob the Dragon Wagon because of its green-on-green-on-green color scheme. My parents custom ordered it and it became my car eight years later. I still troll the Internet looking for an exact replica, but so far no dice.
That love of station wagons is strong, but my love for fast cars is strong too, so when the new Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon crossed my desk I swooned.
This bad boy features a retuned version of AMG’s 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8 that produces 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. That much muscle means this E-Class can launch you and your entire family to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. Take a moment and let that sink in. That’s .1 seconds faster than the Audi R8 V10 Spyder I wrote about recently, and it can haul five of you and your fishing gear in comfort. You get all the luxury niceties of the standard E-class wagon, but with the heart and soul of a fire-breathing dragon. For a predicted price in the $130k range, this thing won’t be cheap, but when it’s less wallet pain than many supercars, which I should remind you, it will beat in a drag race.
Not much else needs to be said. We’ve all seen the regular E-class wagon. Imagine the same thing, but with more testosterone than Lance Armstrong on a PED bender and you’ve got it down.
You’ll also get all the fun stuff that the AMG E 63 S sedan gets. Drift mode. Locking diff. Massive brakes with a ceramic composite option. You’ll be able to drop the kids off at school, head over to Atlanta Motorsports Park for a little stress relief and still be able to put a big bag of soccer balls in the back for practice later than night.
The official unveiling will be at Geneva in March, and everyone can start racing their family trucksters from light to light sometime this fall.
